What is Facial Rejuvenation?
Facial Rejuvenation is a term to describe the comprehensive surgical treatment of the entire face.
This approach often involves the following procedures:
Changes involved in Facial Aging:
Changes can occur from top to bottom.
- In the forehead, we develop deep horizontal and vertical lines, the brows descend along the forehead, especially on the temples.
- Excess eyelid skin can weight the eyes and create a tired, fatigued appearance.
- The cheeks descend down and lose their youthful projection.
- We develop jowling, or fat deposits along the jawline.
- In addition excess skin and muscle bands develop on the neck.
These changes rarely occur in isolation, and usually occur all together.
What are the surgical vs. non-surgical options for Facial Rejuvenation?
Surgical options include facial and neck tightening through facelift, blepharoplasty, brow lift, and facial feeling with the fat.
Nonsurgical options include facial fillers such is Juvaderm and Voluma, as well as Botox. One new exciting treatment is Kybella for neck fat.
Who is an ideal candidate for Facial Rejuvenation?
Facial rejuvenation refers to complete procedures and wish some combination of brow lift, eyelid surgery, or facelift is performed. These procedures harmonize the face in a complete and thorough fashion.Ideal candidates, are those who are otherwise healthy, non-smokers, and those who take good care of their skin. This type of patient also understands the procedure and recovery involved.
Dr. Narasimhan’s Approach
Although individual elements can be addressed, a comprehensive approach can often provide the most symmetric appearance. An individualized approach is most suitable in which we can assess your goals and develop a strategy.
While there are several approaches to address the face and neck, Dr. Narasimhan chooses to perform a technique that addresses the deeper elements, not just the skin. These deeper elements (fascia or SMAS), are important to suspend to maintain a lasting result. The eyelids and forehead may vary depending on your anatomy and goals.
About Dr. Narasimhan
Dr Narasimhan has trained in Dallas with some of the most preeminent plastic surgeons in the world at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In addition, he has written and published several papers on facial aging in PRS (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) the most prestigious plastic surgery journal. The paper, Five Step Necklift, and Facelifting in Massive Weight Loss Patients have described the changes involved in the aging process and how to correct it.
How you can prepare for Facial Rejuvenation procedures
I think some of the best preparation is to undergo a skin care regimen. We have a variety of skin care products, however there are many others on the market. These include facial and eyelid moisturizers with SPF, as well as the skin treatment involving retinol. This can help reverse some of the aging changes to the skin.
During Facial Rejuvenation procedures
If the larger surgical procedure is performed, it would involve probably around 4 to 5 hours in the operating room, and a short period in the recovery area. You will get anesthesia, and procedures are performed in our accredited operating room facility.
Nonsurgical procedures are typically performed in the office with little to no downtime.
Where will the incisions be located?
We will discuss where the incisions will be. In the eyelid they can be either inside or on the outside of the lid. On the forehead incisions are either endoscopic (through small incisions), within the hairline, or behind the hairline.
What to expect during recovery
Facial surgery will involve scars, however these tend to heal incredibly well. In terms of return to heavy activity, I usually tell patients about six weeks. We will see you back in 3 to 4 short visits to go over scar care, dressings, and lifestyle.
While there is always swelling and bruising, you should start to see the effects in the neck and eyelids soon after surgery. After a period of about six weeks most of the swelling has gone down and you should really start to see the natural result.
Will I ever need to repeat a procedure?
While facial rejuvenation does not stop the aging process, it can make you really feel like a younger version of yourself. Many patients do not repeat any procedures, however it is not uncommon to undergo some tightening after 5 to 10 or more years.
How long do results last?
There is no timeline on how long the results will last, but assuming you take care of your skin, stay out of the sun, do not smoke, and stay healthy, your results should last longer. Many patients do you feel younger after 5 to 10 years after the procedure.
How soon can I resume my regular activities?
Lifting over 15 pounds, heavy exercise such as aerobics, or swimming, I usually tell patients about six weeks. Patients can typically return to work with light activities after about seven days.
Risks to Facial Rejuvenation
The main risks involved bleeding, scars, and bruising. These can be minimized with some lifestyle changes, and proper scar care. We will go over all of these during the initial consultation.
