Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

Dr Narasimhan’s Philosophy

Perhaps is one of the most challenging operations in all of plastic surgery is rhinoplasty (nasal reshaping).  The complex structure of the nose makes this operation difficult.  Dr Narasimhan has dual training in plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat surgery, in which he was able to learn the intricate techniques for this operation.  Choosing a surgeon is very important. When we look at a person, the nose is the first thing we see.

Who are good candidates?

Rhinoplasty can be done for cosmetic reasons, for example to reduce the hump on the nose or make a nasal tip smaller; or for functional reasons to improve breathing.  Also, trauma or injury can affect both appearance and function.  A patient with these issues might want to make an appointment.

What is involved?

The approach varies depending on the patient.  Depending on your anatomy, Dr Narasimhan may use an external approach where the scar is on the outside of the nose, or an approach in which incisions are placed on the inside.  The profile of the nose (dorsum), the tip of the nose, and the nasal septum or midline may all be addressed.  Occasionally the nasal bones may have to be repositioned.  In addition there are bony structures called turbinates which may obstruct nasal breathing and may need to be addressed as well.  Dr Narasimhan will use an individualized approach for your case.

What is the recovery and when will I start to see results with this procedure?

The process of healing takes sometimes a year, but the initial swelling may last several weeks.   You will have splints inside the nose and sometimes on the outside to protect the surgical area for about a week. During this time you may have some swelling around the eyes and nose; this is normal.  It will be important not to strain too much, and to maintain light activities. But gradually as this subsides you should start to see improvement in appearance and function.
