Skin Tightening After Massive Weight Loss

Skin Tightening Surgery After Massive Weight Loss

After massive weight loss, either through bariatric surgery or through diet and exercise, the skin losses some of its natural elasticity and shape. Much like a balloon that stretches with volume increase (weight gain), the skin stretches, and often does not retract after the weight is lost. The result can be saggy, redundant skin on the abdomen, thighs, arms, breasts, waist, neck, and buttock area. In order to restore your shape and figure, the solution is often excisional surgery.  These procedures range in length and time, but they are some of the most rewarding and satisfying for patients who have gone through the rigors of weight loss.

Ideal candidates for Skin Tightening Surgery

Any patient with appreciable weight loss. While the weight loss may or may not be dramatic (over 100 lbs), as we age the ability of our skin to contract after weight loss diminishes. The result is stretched out and redundant skin. Sometimes the skin is removed with liposuction, which can remove deposits of fat in targeted areas.

What can I expect during Skin Tightening Surgery?

Typically patients have skin to be removed in multiple areas of the body.  In this case we remove the skin in multiple stages, or surgeries. The first procedure we often perform is a lower body lift, in which redundant skin is removed from the abdomen and backside, as well as the thighs. After that we perform surgery in areas that you would like addressed, such as the arms (brachioplasty), thighs (thighplasty), neck (necklift), or breasts (mastopexy or augmentation/lift).

Recovery details

Recovery can vary, many of the procedures involve long incisions because we need to address tremendous skin excess.  In addition, most patients have some combination of drains to remove fluid and close dead space in the body. These can be in for 2-3 weeks. We will monitor you 2-3 days after surgery, several weeks later and at regular intervals. Swelling can take the course of several weeks to months.  Patients often also wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and help with pain control.

Can I combine Skin Tightening Surgery with another procedure?

Yes, definitely. Often we can combine abdominal and breast procedures but safety is a priority and we will develop a plan that fits your needs. Dr. Narasimhan will discuss the timeline with you in detail, but generally we space procedures about 6 weeks apart.
